Dead bees in the melting snow, Seranon, Alpes Maritimes, France, 18 February 2014. Snow came earlier than expected last winter and made the hives inaccessible to collect and bring back down to Amanda's home at the end of the year, so the bees overwintered here. Some winter die-off in bee populations is natural, but Amanda lost one of her hives entirely, probably due to a mountain storm in January that blew the cover off the hive and let cold rain in, before neighbours found it and closed the roof again.
