Jesper Stechmann, freediver, poses for the photographer at the A.I.D.A. Freediving World Championships, Villefranche-sur-Mer, France, 11 September 2012. At 44 years old, Jesper is one of Denmark's top freedivers and he has set a number of national records.
Before Jesper was old enough to remember, his parents were frightened to find him lying underwater in the bath and holding his breath. His career as a freediver has not, however been constant. His very first freedive was an unpleasant experience, and the fear and panic he felt came back to haunt him after a competitive dive in 2001, leading him to quit the sport altogether. Two years later, counselling and personal changes had helped him greatly, and a freediving friend he bumped into encouraged him to try the sport again. On his first dive, without any training, he achieved an immediate personal best.
"It feels like dying when you are holding your breath, after a while...You have to really want to be able to lose control.'If I let go of this life completely and go down to 100m, will it still hold? Will I make it up again?' When you are deep down in the sea, you are completely alone. You have no senses: no vision (I close my eyes), no hearing, no sense of smell, nothing. You have to search for this essence of being there; its a strange feeling."
