Goran Colak, freediver, poses for the photographer at the A.I.D.A. Freediving World Championships, Villefranche-sur-Mer, France, 11 September 2012. Goran, 29 years old and Croatian, is a world champion freediver and the current world record holder for distance swum on a single breath: 273m (dynamic apnea with fins)

Goran was 12 when he saw 'The Big Blue'. He claims that in other respects he was not a daredevil child; but the film inspired him to challenge himself and others to feats of swimming and breath-holding underwater. During a holiday a couple of years later, on an island in the Adriatic Sea, Goran made a bet with local fishermen that he couldn't hold his breath underwater for 5 minutes. Money wasn't the currency of the bet; the fishermen gambled a lamb on the outcome. Goran won.

"A lot of freedivers are really in love with the sea and sea-life, but actually for me, I'm a competitor. I love to compete, and that's it. I simply love the feeling when I win"

"I tried yoga and meditation, but I just don't feel a need for it. I can relax without any of that stuff."
